The Dawn Moon EP is the latest collection of work from Jeff Bechtel's 'Spanse' project. The pieces are mostly live guitar and synth performances processed in real time by a collection of 'hyperspace' patches written in the max/msp environment. One of the main inspirations for the methodology for these works comes from the writings of the painter Willem DiKooning. The idea of the "Frozen Glimpse'. In his case the paintings were results of very brief visual impression of an image. A single still image, particularly in the sense of photography, portrays a frozen instant in time. He translated this temporal notion into a 'time stretched' entity. Music is a time dependent medium, so one way this concept could be reproduced is taking minute slices of tonal matter and stretching or magnifying them across longer spanses in the temporal realm. This particular material is very atmospheric, ambient, using guitar, synthesizers and experimental sources and production.
